I wish more third-person shooters existed with the Max Payne game mechanics. The balancing is perfect, down to the additional pain killers one gets, after the third retry. Each level is a puzzle to be solved with guns, rifles, and bullet time. The only problem is it doesn’t fit the tone established in the first to Max Payne games. The pacing is excellent, the plot line thrilling, and every level is an exciting chapter to be explored. The Branco family is an interesting ensemble consisting of Rodrigo Branco, a rich housing developer, his wife Fabiana, her do-good sister Giovanna, his politician brother Victor, and his youngest coke/party brother Marcelo. Max Payne 3 is a story about rich and poor Brazilians. Max Payne 1 & 2 were story noire masterpieces. Sequels are expected to take what made the previous instalments great and improve up on it. 7/10 (Good).ġ00% PCMax Payne 3 fails as a sequel. It’s a consistently good time tied together with clever dialogue and engaging set pieces. The story was decent, and it felt lacking of another leg to stand on, but the gameplay and bullet time mechanics alone warrant a playthrough. Max Payne 3 is not a perfect game, but most audiences will play it and enjoy all that is has to offer. I personally didn’t have a problem with it really, though sometimes it was distracting. I could also see the constant use of the sort of neon lens flare effect to be a turn off to some people.

The writing for Max in this game is good, perhaps not quite as good as the clever dialogue in the first game, but overall stays in line with that witty yet pessimistic monotone dialogue that the series is known for. It’s very fun to use, but it quickly ceases to be a leg for the game to stand on. The bullet time feature is absolutely awesome but without it you’d have some mostly average third person shooter gameplay. While the base gameplay is solid, there are many awesome set pieces, and the dialogue is good, it feels too much like a one trick pony to warrant a higher rating. It is fun from front to back, and I almost gave it an 8, but it remains a 7 for a few reasons.
